Do you understand the Concept’s of RAID?

By admin Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

The acronym RAID means Redundant Array of Independent (or Inexpensive) Disks. RAID contains different level of RAID version is defined, each providing different trade-offs in features and performance.

There are two main purposes of RAID Technology:-

a)  Method of storing the same data in different areas

b)  Speed up and stabilize your computers performance.

RAID is not necessarily easy to install and maintain on your own computer system, and some of the people think why it’s required and don’t know how effective the technology is for every organization, If you could assume that had a hard drive crash, you know how costly in time and effort it is to restore the data on that hard drive. So if we are using RAID technology with your hard drive there is no need to restore your data and application because it already getting redundant on other hard drives which is in process at the back. So you can think what the effectiveness of RAID on your time and money to restore your data and application.

What Types of RAID Are Available?

There are a number of variations of RAID; every RAID has their own functionality, advantages and disadvantages.

1.  RAID Level 0 is based on a method and it’s called striping, as per RAID 0 functionality is concerned that is segmenting the data on your computer into smaller chunks of data that are placed across all available disk drives, and that smaller packets of data scattered across a number of drives can be very quickly pulled together into a coherent whole.

2. RAID Level 1 introduces the benefit of mirroring or copying all of your data onto at least one another drive, perhaps even onto many other drives. This ensures that your data will be duplicated in whole on at least one other hard disk, so if your data is lost in a disk failure, there is at least one extant copy immediately available.

The biggest disadvantage to RAID 1 is the cost of having additional disk drives containing the mirror of your data.

3. Combination of RAID Levels 0 and 1

This is the combination as under the functionality or features of RAID 0 and 1. This combination offers the best of both worlds. The main functionality of this is redundancy of your data and improving performance.

4.  RAID 5 is often viewed as the ideal mix of good performance, good fault tolerance, high capacity and storage efficiency. Reason being that RAID 5 stripes both data and parity information across three or more drives.

Instead of mirroring data, RAID 5 stores parity (error-checking) information. If there’s an error or bit corruption, the parity data should catch it, and the RAID controller should correct.  Is RAID Hardware Better Than RAID Software?

What about Unlimited Bandwidth in Hosting?

By admin Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

bandwidth

Nothing is unlimited, be aware of it!!

What do you mean by unlimited bandwidth, and how any provider can provide unlimited bandwidth at such a cheaper cost. In hosting the main elements are web space and bandwidth. Disk space is the space you have allotted on the web server to store your website. Bandwidth is an amount you have available to transfer web pages from the web server to the browsers of visitors to your site.

“Suppose if you could get unlimited bandwidth for around $20.00 a month or less, so why isn’t Yahoo or Microsoft hosted there and why they are investing enormous resources and money in bandwidth and data transfer usage”.

If you are looking for unlimited bandwidth so you must be aware about the concept of unlimited bandwidth which described under following points.

  • Analysis of website for unlimited bandwidth qualification:-

A lot of hosts do this – if your site uses less than, say, 5 gigs per month, it qualifies for unlimited bandwidth. So before provide unlimited bandwidth it needs to analyze whether this site is qualified or not to allocate unlimited bandwidth. As soon as your traffic goes above that you no longer qualify for the unlimited bandwidth and are either charged for the excess or forced to move your site. In other words, it’s unlimited as long as you stay within the limits.

  • Restricted bandwidth.

If your site contains images, Mp3, zip, tar, exe, and number of file in which lot of graphics work done, so the bandwidth is not going to be unlimited and hosting provide will restrict you for your bandwidth usages.

  • Fake Commitment.

Some hosting provider say things like “We won’t penalize you for your success,” but once your site does become too popular, you find that your account has been deactivated or suspended. These are little backup plans they use as an excuse to deactivate an account, usually without refund, for whatever reason they want to. So always let the point clear in front of customers that we can provide this limit of bandwidth usage and if you reached the bandwidth usage limit that will cost some extra amount/month as per your requirement.

  • Why do they do it?

Hosts use false advertising because other hosts do it. They feel that user don’t know about bandwidth and what is the meaning of this?  Consumers also can’t assume how much bandwidth they required.

Statistically, most sites use less than 500 MB per month, which is 1/2 of one gig. Unless you are offering software or music or video downloads or are just very popular, you shouldn’t have to worry too much about bandwidth.

Do you need a Dedicated Server?

By admin Monday, June 29th, 2009

If you are looking for a space to host your website so you have only two options i.e. Shared Hosting and Dedicated server hosting.

Shared servers always are a cheaper option to host your websites. They usually require a lower level of technical skills too, because the host does most of the server administration. At initial stage or for smaller companies this would be a great option to choose. While shared servers are the most cost-effective option for small web-sites, they are not necessarily a good option for large, “mission-critical” or high-traffic web-sites. For these a dedicated server may well be necessary.

Dedicated servers are more expensive to rent than shared servers, and they also require a higher level of technical skill to operate. In shared hosting you will feel some restriction as compare with dedicated server hosting. Some Flexibility with dedicated servers are as follows:-

Flexibility and Software
With shared servers, you will have limited access to the operating system, and software applications will be limited to those, which are provided by the host. If you required installing your own script or software on the server it won’t be possible in shared Hosting.

Scalability
As your site grows, your traffic grows and your applications become more demanding, you will need to upgrade your server. If you are using a shared server, your upgrade options will be limited. Your host will usually allow you to increase the amount of disk space available to your site — but that is all. You will not be able to upgrade your hardware resources.

Security
Information on a shared server is likely to be less secure than information on a dedicated server. A dedicated server can also be provided with its own firewall. If you are storing highly sensitive information on your server, this increased security will obviously be a high priority.

So both options are good as per your requirement and what resources your sites required. So before hosting your site or application you needs to analyze how much resources and hardware resource it requires.
